Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about a virtual address and virtual mailbox.
How does the shipping rate calculator work?
The USGM shipping rate calculator gives you an instant estimate based on your mail/package weight, dimensions, and destination. Simply enter those details and we’ll show you available rates across carriers and service levels. Keep in mind that final rates are confirmed at the time of shipment, as carrier pricing can vary slightly based on real-time factors.
Which carriers does US Global Mail ship with?
We work with all major carriers — including USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL — so you can choose the service that best fits your budget and delivery timeline. Whether you need economy shipping or express international delivery, we’ll present your options and let you decide. And because we ship high volumes, we’ve negotiated discounts with FedEx, UPS, and DHL that we pass directly on to you — meaning you’ll often pay far less than standard retail rates. Note USPS does not offer discounts.
Are the rates shown what I’ll actually be charged?
The calculator provides a close estimate of your shipping cost, but your final charge may vary slightly based on carrier surcharges, dimensional weight adjustments, or any special handling your package requires. We always show you the confirmed rate before processing your shipment, so there are no surprises.
What is dimensional weight and how is it calculated?
Dimensional weight (also called “DIM weight”) is a pricing method used by carriers that accounts for the space a package occupies, not just how much it weighs. If a package is large but light, carriers charge based on its dimensional weight rather than its actual weight — whichever is greater.
It’s calculated using this formula:
Dimensional Weight = (Length × Width × Height) / DIM divisor
The DIM divisor varies by carrier — FedEx and UPS typically use 139 for international shipments and 139 for domestic, while DHL may differ. For example, a box that’s 20″ × 16″ × 12″ has a volume of 3,840 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that gives a dimensional weight of roughly 28 lbs. If the box actually weighs only 10 lbs, you’d be billed at the 28 lb rate.
Our calculator factors dimensional weight in automatically unless your package in excessively large, so the estimate you see already reflects how carriers will actually price your shipment.
How does US Global Mail help me save money on shipping?
One of the biggest advantages of using US Global Mail is that you can hold your incoming mail and packages and ship everything together in a single shipment — so you only pay to ship once instead of many times.
This is especially valuable for:
- Expats and frequent travelers who receive mail, packages, and documents over days or weeks. Rather than forwarding each item separately, we bundle everything into one consolidated shipment to your location abroad, saving you hundreds of dollars a year.
- Businesses collecting checks that receive checks from multiple clients throughout the week. Instead of shipping each check individually, we can consolidate them and ship them in single shipment based on your preferences reducing shipping costs dramatically while keeping your receivables on a predictable schedule.
- E-commerce sellers and remote teams managing returns, invoices, or supplier documents across multiple locations.
Combined with our carrier volume discounts, consolidation is one of the most effective ways we help customers get more value from every shipment.
Do you ship internationally, and which countries do you serve?
Yes — international shipping is one of our specialties. We ship to over 190 countries worldwide, making us a trusted solution for expats, remote workers, and global businesses. Please note that international shipments may be subject to customs duties and import taxes, which are determined by the destination country and are the recipient’s responsibility.
How do I request a shipment after using the calculator?
Only USGM customers can avail the discounts. Log in to your US Global Mail account, navigate to the item you’d like forwarded, and submit a ship request. You’ll select your preferred carrier and service level at that time. Not a member yet? Sign up and get a real US address where we’ll receive your mail and packages on your behalf.
